I came across this study early in my career, and I have not been able to set it aside since.
Researchers at the Harvard School of Public Health were studying breast size and handedness. That was the research question. But what appeared in the data was something nobody was looking for: women who did not wear bras had half the risk of breast cancer compared with women who did.

The mechanism they identified was lymphatic compression. A bra band and underwire sit directly on the tissue that drains cellular waste from the breast. Under pressure, all day, that drainage slows. Over years, waste sits in tissue that was never designed to hold it.
I share this with every patient who asks me about bras. It has been in the literature for over thirty years now, and I have not seen a single manufacturer acknowledge it. Most of the women in my practice have worn one every single day since they were teenagers. Not one of them had ever been asked, not once, what that daily pressure might actually be doing to her body.
Clinical note. The finding was incidental. The study was not designed to look for it. That is exactly why it is so difficult to dismiss. Nobody had a reason to want it to be true. The trapezius carries your bra straps. Underneath it runs the circulation and drainage serving your neck and head. Researchers published in PM&R found that bra straps contribute to a named condition called scapular downward rotation syndrome, where the constant downward pull rotates the shoulder blade out of position, compressing the nerves and vessels underneath. It causes neck pain, shoulder pain, and restricted movement.
Patients bring me headaches that start behind the eyes in the afternoon, a heavy foggy feeling by three o'clock, and neck tension they have had so long they no longer report it. We investigate sleep. We investigate screens. We investigate blood pressure. Patients spend a few hundred dollars on physical therapy, several hundred to more than a thousand on imaging, and still end up discussing cortisone before anyone asks about the two narrow straps pressing into that exact area since breakfast.
Clinical note. The condition has a name in the literature: scapular downward rotation syndrome. It appears in a rehabilitation medicine journal, not a fashion magazine. That should tell you how seriously the research community takes this mechanism. That is why I start by removing the band instead of asking patients to chase the pain. A research group in Japan ran a series of studies on what happens when you put sustained pressure on the torso. One study tested a brassiere specifically. Women wore it during waking hours for a week, then went without it for a week, with diet and routine held constant.

The bloating, the heaviness after meals, the feeling of being backed up that patients describe to me and attribute to diet or stress. In some cases the garment they have been wearing since morning is a contributing factor nobody has looked at.
Clinical note. Three peer-reviewed studies, same research group, same conclusion. Tight garments slow your gut. I have not seen a single practitioner ask about clothing pressure as part of a digestive workup. If after-dinner bloat is part of your daily routine, I tell you to remove the band before blaming another meal.
